They’re not kidding

With so many movies to watch this autumn – Wallace and Gromit, Serenity, Harry Potter 4, King Kong – you have to wonder why someone would take a 10 year old video game franchise, and, well, make a movie out of it…

Now we all remember such classic movies as “Mortal Kombat“, “Street Fighter” and who could forget “Super Mario Brothers” – all great examples of why you shouldn’t make a movie out of a computer game…

So now we have “Doom” – yes, that’s right, the mindless “running through corridors shooting at monsters” game which spawned a whole host of first person shooters (yes, I know about Wolfenstein 3D before anyone picks me up that Doom wasn’t first) has been turned into a major movie.

Now, I’ve not seen it yet, so it might actually be fairly good, although as it features a “first person perspective” sequence to pay homage to the game (pass the chainsaw please), I have my doubts… will whole cinema audiences be leaning to the left and right to dodge the fireballs in the way that many a gamer in the mid 90’s did?

Could be interesting though – and it’s UK release is on 28th October…

  1. Well, I’d be hoping for “never” – but the way marketing people think these days, I expect it’s only a matter of time…

  2. I liked Mortal Kombat & it’s sequel. Why didn’t you mention Resident Evil, now that sucked. Very good for not mentioning Tomb Raider though.

  3. Yeah, TR may have been little more than an Indiana Jones rip-off – but who can complain about Angelina Jolie!
